Rebuilding Emergency Response After a Well Control Incident

An upstream oil & gas operator running multiple production sites across a single basin.

Synergy Nexus rebuilt emergency response around three tested layers after a well control incident exposed a plan that had never been rehearsed.

The Challenge

A documented emergency response and business continuity plan satisfied regulatory filing requirements but had not been exercised under realistic conditions since it was written. When a well control incident triggered an unplanned shutdown and evacuation across two adjacent production sites, the incident command structure on paper did not match who was actually on site and empowered to act — compounding regulatory exposure on top of the operational risk as personnel mobilization and external communications lagged the true state of the incident.

Our Approach

Synergy Nexus rebuilt the program around three tested layers: a business continuity plan covering the loss of critical production and processing equipment, a crisis management structure with named decision-makers and escalation authority independent of shift assignment, and an emergency response protocol integrated directly with the operator's existing QHSE management system. Each layer was validated through unannounced tabletop exercises, engineered to test the plan under conditions that mirror how a real incident actually unfolds.

Results
01

Replaced a single static continuity document with three tested, integrated layers spanning facilities, command structure, and emergency response

02

Compressed incident command activation time to a target of under 90 minutes through unannounced exercises run across both production sites

03

Assigned and trained a backup for every critical decision-making role, closing the single-point-of-failure exposure the incident revealed
